actually I think I made a mistake, the doc is native notes being converted to MIME

I just realized I said the mail originated from internet but the mail was actually created by the notes client. I got two issues mixed up. Maybe the MIME messages coming from internet get converted when opened and saved by notes client. But the email I am messing with now was created by notes client. And I was opening with OPEN_RAW_MIME option. So the $FILE object is disappearing.

Basically what I am trying to do is no matter what type of message that I open I can add a field without causing any type of conversion. I am guessing this will require me testing what kind of message I am opening and then when I get ready to add the field open the document in such a manner with right options that it will not be converted when saved.

I have not had time to get back to this yet but I do appreciate the responses because this is giving me ideas to try when I do get the time to jump back on my project.
